Julia Heinen, Clarinet

I have been in the orchestra since January 2023 but I subbed in the 1980s. 

I love being part of Civic because of the sense of community. Many of the members are people I have played with since the 1980s who I love making music with.  

I am a professor of music (clarinet) at California State University, Northridge (since 1995), a clarinet soloist, chamber musician and the artistic director and clarinetist/bass clarinetist with a contemporary ensemble TEMPO (The Epicenter Music Performance Organization). I also teach clarinet at Bethel University and perform with the amazing fun bass clarinet quartet “4 Low Pitches”.

I live in a historic house in St. Paul. Among many activities, I enjoy knitting. My dog, Max, loves to sleep beside me while I’m knitting, but he also has a great time going to his doggy day care.
