Civic Orchestra of MinneapolisWelcome to our 60th season!

Welcome to the Sixtieth Season of music-making with the Civic Orchestra of Minneapolis! The Civic Orchestra of Minneapolis celebrates its 60th Season of playing orchestral favorites as well as the new and unusual. It is a true joy for me to lead this group of dedicated musicians and serving our mission of bringing music to our community. The season opener on November 6th is a classic model of programming by the Civic. The standard favorite on the program is the pastoral Symphony no. 2 of Brahms. We celebrate the new on this concert revisiting our 50th Anniversary commission, William McGlaughlin’s Angelus, which was written to commemorate the events of September 11th. Our principal violist takes the stage for Hindemith’s moving Trauermusik and a musician of our community, Jenny Klukken, plays a remarkable marimba concerto composed in 2005. Other highlights of the season include the symphonies of Schumann and Berlioz and unusual selections including Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments and a Piazzolla tango concerto for guitar and accordion. We also dedicate one concert to the children of our community where I will once again have the pleasure of leading a caravan of youngsters on a Safari through the orchestra. Come celebrate with us as we embark on 60 years of playing orchestral music! Cary John Franklin, Music Director |
